Christmas with The Ridge—[Devotional]

Going Deeper with the Message:

Jesus Christ, Light of the World
by: Ben Biles

As Tim talked about extensively on Sunday, Jesus is the light of the world. What does this mean? It means that, though the whole world is in spiritual darkness, Jesus came to be the light for us. Through Him, we can see the truth of God and know Him in a personal relationship. We know this because Jesus said it himself in John 8, “Then Jesus spoke to them again: “I am  the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Though we lived in darkness, we can now come to know the light because God came down to earth himself to be our light.

When Jesus speaks of life, He speaks of knowing God. This means that we can only have life, true life, when we know God through believe in His Son. If you do not know God, then you do not have life. But once you believe in Jesus for the forgiveness of sin, you are given eternal life. You are forever secured in His salvation. Believers can rest assured that they will never walk in spiritual darkness again, but will enjoy the love and grace of God for all eternity.

What does this mean for us? It means that we have cause for great rejoicing. Our lives should be marked by an irresistible joy for we know we have life eternal. Jesus says in John 10, “I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance” (John 10:10). Previously, we tried to gain happiness and satisfaction through things that left us unfulfilled and striving for more. But now, God gives our lives meaning and purpose as He continually pours out His love on us.

We rejoice throughout the year, but specifically each Christmas season, because Jesus came to earth. This week, don’t lose focus of what you have been given by God through His Son. Let your hope shine through any worry, fear, or struggle, for you know that you are God’s child forever and ever. Rejoice that you know the Light of the World and have eternal life through Him.
