Deviate [6-8th grade]
The middle school years are filled with growth, change, and excitement for students. That’s exactly what Deviate is designed to be about! Through large group teaching, small group application, service projects, big events, games, and fun, Deviate is all about students connecting with each other and God in a meaningful way. Students have the opportunity to learn God’s truth in relevant settings, and see how it applies directly to their lives. Deviate meets Sunday during the 9 and 11 o’clock services in the Deviate (middle school) room on the second floor, and Tuesday nights at 7:00 in the CRC gym.
*In the event of Monongalia School closings (i.e. snow days) on Tuesdays, Deviate will not meet.
What happens Sunday
What to expect: In Deviate, 6–8th graders* join together in a fun and casual atmosphere. Yup, you can just wear what you’d wear to school! The fun begins with a variety of games, music, and other interactive elements, as well as a video or live speaker who shares how God’s truth connects to our everyday lives. Before and after services, students hang out in the Deviate room playing air hockey, xbox, and hanging with their friends.
Before and after services, students hang out in the Deviate room playing air hockey, xbox, and hanging with their friends. The room opens 15 minutes prior to each service, and closes 15 minutes after the close of service.
Where to go: The Deviate room is located upstairs at the end of the hallway opposite Kid Zone. If you enter the double doors just past the coffee bar, there will be a set of stairs on your left. At the top of the stairs head straight down the hallway toward the air hockey table. We are at the end of the hallway.
What you’ll do: The first time you visit Deviate, you’ll fill out a new student information card. This can be done at the Kids & Students desk in the main Lobby or at the Deviate room upstairs. The next time you return, you will enter the phone number you listed on the card at the iPad stations at the Deviate room door to check in.
Who can come: Anyone in 6–8th grades is invited to all Deviate events. On Sundays we are combined with Verge [5th grade] for the first half of our time, so any 5th graders you know can come along with you, too!
How long is Deviate? Deviate lasts for approximately 1 hour (either 9:00–10:00 or 11:00–12:00). Students do not need to be picked up by their parents, but are encouraged to choose a place to meet their parents after the main service has ended. Many families choose a location in the gym or lobby. Students are also free to stay in the Deviate room after service and have their parents come meet them there.
What happens Tuesday
What to expect: Tuesday nights start off like a giant party where you get to see all your friends! Doors open at 6:30 pm, and students are able to play in the gym until we begin at 7:00. Concessions are available from 6:30-7:00 pm. The night begins with everyone all together, playing high energy games and having a ton of fun. The night continues with small groups (age and gender specific) where students discuss how God’s truth applies to everyday life and the craziness of middle school. The evening ends at 8:15 pm.
Where to go: Tuesday nights Deviate meets in the CRC Gym. As you drive into the entry road, turn left to go to the parking lot on the side of the building. You will see a door that is marked with a Deviate sign, which will take you right into the gym area.
